Multisig Custody and Quarterly Documentation
15 April 2025
Multisig arrangements distribute signing authority across multiple keys, often held on separate hardware wallets. This improves security but complicates quarterly documentation: a balance may only be visible when the required number of signers participate.
Partial verification options
When not all signers can attend a single visit, we offer two approaches. First, schedule a brief follow-up visit when the remaining signers are available, at reduced cost for returning clients. Second, accept written authorisation from absent signers permitting verification of the keys present, with a clear notation in the report that full multisig display was not witnessed.
Neither approach compromises the air gap. Each present signer powers on their own device independently.
What the report states
Multisig reports identify the configuration (for example, 2-of-3) and list which keys were verified during the visit. Balances displayed with partial signing are recorded with a footnote explaining the multisig context. Auditors and limited partners typically accept this format when the limitation is stated clearly.
Coordination tips
Identify signers and their availability before requesting a visit date. Quarter-end weeks fill quickly, and coordinating three principals in Gangnam is harder than scheduling one. Allow at least two weeks lead time for multisig engagements.
If your arrangement uses a coordinator device that aggregates balances across keys, describe this in the questionnaire. Some setups display a consolidated view only after multiple devices are present in the same room.
When multisig exceeds our scope
Grovepoint documents what can be witnessed on air-gapped devices during an in-person visit. We do not configure multisig setups, recover lost keys, or arbitrate disputes between signers. Engagements where signers cannot agree on verification terms are declined rather than documented incompletely without consent.
